(International Council of Museums),

.museum is a generic top-level domain (gTLD) used exclusively
by museums, museum associations, and individual members of the museum profession, as these groups are defined by
the International Council of Museums (ICOM). In joint action with the J. Paul Getty Trust, ICOM established the Museum
Domain Management Association (MuseDoma), headed by Cary Karp, for the purpose of submitting an application to
ICANN for the creation of the new gTLD, and to operate it if the application was approved. The .museum domain was
entered into the root of Domain Name System on 20 October 2001, and was the first sponsored top-level domain to
be instituted through ICANN's action.
The idea behind this domain is that it will be beneficial for Internet users to have a segment of the TLD namespace
reserved for the use of museums; a namespace whose conventions are defined by the museum community. The .museum
TLD will grant users a quick and intuitive way to verify the authenticity of a museum site. Conversely, since it is a type of
formal third-party certification, museums using this namespace obtain a way to assure visitors of the site's validity.
In addition to the eligibility requirements specified in the .museum charter, a number of naming conventions apply to
the labeling of subdomains. Extensive support is also being introduced for internationalized domain names, as described at about.museum.
The .museum top-level domain (TLD) is a unifying label on the Internet, developed exclusively for the museum community. Providing information and resources to the public, and a clear identity for museums and the resources they offer, .museum is the place to find genuine museums – enabling their definite recognition as a basis for sharing and accessing information on museums worldwide.
ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) established .museum as a top-level domain through formal agreement with the Museum Domain Management Association (MuseDoma), which both maintains domain policy and administers the .museum registry.
.museum is a restricted TLD. This means that only genuine museums, museums associations and museum professionals are eligible to register names in .museum.
Authenticity
In other top-level domains (TLDs), anyone can register a domain name including the letters
"museum". This does not mean they are museums. You will only find genuine museums in
.museum! Eligibility for .museum is based on the definition of museum provided by
the International Council of Museum (ICOM). A name in .museum tells Internet users that
its holder is a museum, museums association or individual member of the museum professional
according to criteria established by the museum community, itself. By its restriction to genuine
museums, the domain validates and verifies the legitimacy of museums around the world.
In response to the unanticipated rapid growth of the Internet during the 1990's, the creators of the Domain Name System proposed the introduction of new generic top-level domains (generic meaning global, as .com .org .net, in contrast to national, as .uk and .fr),
ICOM (International Councils of Museums) realised that, sooner or later, there would be a domain for museums. In order for this domain to be meaningful for the museum community and the public, responsibility for it needed to evolve from within the museum community.
In October 2001, an agreement was signed between ICANN and MuseDoma establishing .museum, which went into operation the following month.
The basis for .museum policy is provided by the ICOM definition of museum. This policy restricts the holding of names in .museum to genuine museums, museums associations and individual members of the museum profession. All applications for names are subject to review, but eligibility can often most easily be demonstrated by membership in ICOM or another professional museums association.
Identity
The .museum TLD allows museums, museums associations and museum professionals to be
identified by a global audience via their unique identity on the Internet, immediately
communicating the resources they offer to the public as a bona fide.museum.
Visibility
The .museum TLD is globally visible! The structure of the .museum name space makes
it easy for non-specialists to locate museums, even without knowing their precise names.
Significance
Registration in .museum assures that individual museums have a place of their own on the
Internet, providing a meaningful and verifiable identity. The dedicated domain provides all
museums — regardless of their area of specialization, size of collections, or level of
funding — with equal opportunities for visibility on the Internet.
New communication channels
Museums extend access to their most valued cultural and scientific treasures through the
Internet. The .museum TLD provides a platform for the development of services that can
enhance the scope of this outreach. This is already evident in the index of .museum names
at http://index.museum. As the domain grows an array of
further services designed specifically for the .museum community will become available.
SIMPLIED PROCEDURES FOR REGISTRATION IN THE .MUSEUM TOP-LEVEL DOMAIN
Stockholm, Sweden, 30 April 2004 - The Museum Domain Management Association (MuseDoma) announced today that it was simplifying procedures for
the registration of names in the .museum top-level domain ("dot-museum" - http://about.museum) The new procedures take effect immediately.
Earlier this year it became possible to register Internationalized Domain Names (IDN - http://about.museum/idn) in .museum and the simplified registration procedures are intended to encourage the broadest possible participation in the continuing internationalization of the domain. The accession of the ten new Member States to the European Union on 1 May provides a particularly rich opportunity for enhancing the cultural and linguistic scope of .museum. The simplified registration procedures are being introduced now in recognition of this event and as a statement of welcome to the museums of the enlarged EU.
It was previously necessary for all applications for names in .museum to be accompanied by a fee to cover the cost of verifying the eligibility of the applicant, and conducting the dialog needed to ensure the correct form and use of subsequently registered names. Applications that can be processed without such discussion are now exempt from the advance fee. When necessary, notification of the fee being due will be issued subsequent to the initial review of the application.
The continuing development of the index requires that generic terms which might appear in it are available for shared use. Names in the form city.museum or discipline.museum are therefore reserved for inclusion in three-label names in the form ourname.city.museum. Names with a specific designation on the second level such as, abcde.museum, ourart.museum, or blrd.museum may, however, be registered directly.
The registration process may be initiated via the forms provided by MuseDoma at https://ens.museum. The authorized .museum registrars are currently
modifying their own registration forms to reflect the changes. Prospective applicants are also welcome to contact MuseDoma directly by e-mail at register@nic.museum.
